Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic invited his “political opponents” on July 17 to a dialog, saying that conversation “is the essence of democracy.”
In an Instagram post, Vucic said he invited his political opponents to talks “many times,” but that they “almost never” responded. “As elections approach, and with the aim of creating the best possible democratic conditions and ensuring a peaceful transition of power - which our opponents believe will happen because they will win the elections, according to their polls - I also want to say that, as soon as we receive election results that show that they won, an hour or two after polling stations close, I will congratulate our opponents. However, it is important that we sit down, talk and handle everything in a civilized manner,” he said.
The president added that he also expected his political opponents to congratulate the Serbian Progressive Party if it won the elections. His statement was criticized by part of the opposition.
