In a July 22 evening post on X, European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos stated that there has been a recent surge in attacks on members of Serbia’s civil society and underscored that the strength of this community is important to EU enlargement.
“Over the past days, many Serbian civil society representatives have been subjected to smear campaigns and personal attacks,” Kos wrote. “A strong civil society and engaged citizens are an asset to every democracy and essential to a successful enlargement process. They deserve respect and the freedom to speak without intimidation or attempts to delegitimize their work.”
The post came just after public reports of Get Going for Change leader Savo Manojlovic receiving numerous death threats. Leading up to the spate of online hatred, pro-regime media conducted an intense 24-hour smear campaign against Manojlovic, accusing him and his movement of causing the suicide of police officer Vasilije Lalovic.
