Kosovo Analyst: Question of Serbs, Northern Kosovo Has Worsened Relations between Pristina and Washington

Kosovo analyst Agon Maliqi said on July 23 that the question of the Serbs and northern Kosovo remains the main reason for the deterioration of relations between Pristina and the U.S.

Maliqi stressed that without solving these issues Kosovo cannot expect greater diplomatic support from Washington. He told the Pristina KTV station that the U.S. expects Kosovo institutions to act in coordination with international partners, adding that Washington has clearly set red lines.

"They pertain to Serbian educational and health institutions in Kosovo which are still functioning parallelly. Kosovo's institutions have been sent a message that if they start encroaching upon these institutions, Washington is going to review other measures," Maliqi said, stressing that the political situation in Kosovo reflects on relations with international partners as a result of the lack of functional institutions.

He said that the U.S. administration wants good bilateral relations with all of the Western Balkan countries and, as he stressed, is not applying a privileged approach to any of them.
