Green-Left Front to Support General Election Ticket Nominated by Student Movement

The opposition Green-Left Front announced on July 31 that in the upcoming general election it will support the ticket nominated by the student movement.

The party said in a statement that rallying around the student movement "is currently the best way to reach a change of government and pave the way for restoring democracy, the rule of law and Serbia's European future."

"The support comes in the belief and with the expectation that the student movement will remain consistent in the values based on which it has gained citizens' trust: freedom, rule of law, equality and protection of human dignity, media freedom and the free expression of views and opinions, academic integrity, valuing knowledge and expertise, solidarity, the responsibility of a government to citizens, as well as opposition to political privileges and abuse of institutions," said the statement.

The Green-Left Front added that it expected the election platform of the ticket nominated by the student movement "to advocate for the continuation of Serbia's European integration, an unambiguous break with the regime of the Serbian Progressive Party and the Socialist Party of Serbia, its structures and practices, as well as for legal procedures to be carried out after the change of government to determine individual accountability for human rights violations and collapse of democracy."

"We expect from the student movement's ticket a relationship based on mutual respect, non-aggression and coordination with the other actors who share the goal of dismissing the Progressive [party] regime," said the Green-Left Front.

The party also said it will make "timely" decisions regarding other levels of elections. "We are not abandoning the program and political identity of the Green-Left Front and continue to fight for a democratic, socially just, environmentally sustainable and European Serbia, where clean air, water and soil are protected, as well as human and workers' rights, gender equality and public property, where public services are available and society is based on solidarity. We will continue to give a full contribution to the common fight and will cooperate with all actors who share these goals," the Green-Left Front stated.
