On Aug. 4, Serbs commemorate 31 years of the beginning of Croatian military and police Operation Storm against the Republic of Serb Krajina which lasted until Aug. 7 1995, when more than 200,000 Serbs were persecuted from their homes in ethnic cleansing.
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will attend the commemoration in Mrkonjic Grad in Republika Srpska (RS). He is touring RS, which observes Aug. 4 as the Day of Mourning, and also places with Serb population in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In Serbia, which observes Aug. 4 as the Day of Remembrance of all victims and expelled Serbs in Operation Storm, a memorial service will be held at the Church of Saint Mark in Belgrade.
Three Croatian generals were tried before The Hague Tribunal for crimes against civilians in Operation Storm, but all were acquitted.
Vucic called on citizens to listen to what he will say in Mrkonjic Grad, stressing that “no one has ever been more conversant with the position of Serbs in the region than him.”
Speaking to the RTS public broadcaster, Vucic said that he has the most experience and that no one has ever been the president of Serbia and in power in Serbia for so long.
“I will present certain conclusions on how we must act in the future, so I am asking people to listen to my speech,” Vucic said.
