The Independent Union of Education Workers of Serbia on Aug. 4 described as disastrous the Draft Law on Amendments to the Law on the fundamentals of the education system, presented by the Education Ministry, and called on teachers in primary and secondary schools in Belgrade, university professors, students, and other members of the academic community, as well as parents of schoolchildren and students to voice their opposition.
“The amendments aim to permanently remove the incumbent regime’s critics from the education system and to prevent engagement of parents in school management as well as any spontaneous and free organization of students,” the union said.
It stressed that education is not only important for educators, but rather matters to everyone.
“Society should not keep silent while the government is destroying schools, because it means ruining its foundations, capabilities and future,” the union said.
A debate on these amendments will be held at the Constitutional Court on Aug. 5.
