The recent criminal complaint filed by former Belgrade police chief Veselin Milic against Criminal Police Directorate Chief Marko Kricak and Crime Suppression Service Chief Bosko Sekulovic represents “a war within the police service,” attorney Jovan Rajic told the Aug. 7 edition of the Danas daily.
“What’s going on is that they are vying for better positions within the organized criminal enterprise [Milic and Kricak] are both a part of, which is led by Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic. Therefore, it very much seems like an internal reckoning,” Rajic said.
Milic filed a complaint claiming that Kricak and Sekulovic abused their office, forging evidence and pressuring witnesses and defendants all so as to frame Milic of being present during the May 12 murder of Aleksandar ‘Baja’ Nesovic and of subsequently helping remove evidence of the crime.
While the charges of aiding and abetting against Milic have been dropped, he lost his job over the scandal and is still facing charges of not reporting the murder, though he claims he left the premises before the crime occurred.
Rajic, however, finds it “especially disheartening” that it is completely impossible to believe either side’s account of the events, but did admit Milic’s claims are plausible “given how these things function.”
It is questionable, the attorney said, who is right, what actually happened and who is framing whom, and what is most likely true is that both Milic and Kricak “attempted to frame each other to achieve higher rank within the hierarchy.”
“Here, we have a closed circuit: the Belgrade Higher Prosecutor’s Office, the police and the mafia. This triangle is, unfortunately, the strongest in the country, and all of them together serve the leader of this organized criminal group, i.e. the Vucic brothers,” Rajic stated.
