On Aug. 27, Luka Causic, the chief of Serbia’s Sector for Emergency Situations, announced that the wildfire that has been ravaging the Deliblato Sands wildlife preserve since Aug. 5 is finally showing signs of being contained and that the country is currently battling a total of 12 active wildfires.
“The situation is rather favorable. For the first time the satellite has shown no new spot fires in Deliblato Sands,” Causic told the RTS public broadcasting service.
Despite no new outbreaks, the flames at the Deliblato preserve are still being intensively doused and the site will be under careful scrutiny given the extremely strong winds forecast for the weekend.
“Things are also stable on Mt. Goc and Mt. Stolovi, near Kraljevo. Stabilization will be declared in Lebane today as long as there are no extreme weather changes,” Causic added. While smoke contamination from the Lebane fire has displaced 12 households, the most severe of the three mentioned blazes remains the wildfire on Mt. Stolovi, where hundreds of hectares have been burning for three weeks straight, in an area largely accessible only from the air.
