The European Union (EU) has extended its support for Serbia in fighting wildfires until Sept. 5, the European Commission reported on Aug. 28.
Four helicopters from the strategic reserve, deployed from the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia, will remain in Serbia, along with one ground firefighting team. The Commission explained that the scale and duration of the fires continued to place significant pressure on the capacities of local emergency services and threaten one of Serbia's most important natural areas.
"When Serbia requested assistance through the Civil Protection Mechanism on Aug. 21, the EU responded immediately. It took less than 24 hours from the moment Serbia submitted its request for European helicopters to be in the air," the statement said, adding that close coordination with the Serbian authorities was continuing.
