After three separate incidents involving drones carrying explosives in Leipzig in August, German police have begun exploring possible ties to similar events in Serbia and Poland, German media reported on Sept. 3.
Citing security sources, the Bild daily claimed that the investigation is focused on an arrest near Serbia’s border with Hungary on June 11, when Serbian police apprehended two men – one a citizen of Serbia, the other with dual Serbian-Russian citizenship – who were transporting components for a modified drone, a remote controller and two cans of explosive.
The German police are interested in potential ties between this event and those in Leipzig given that the components seized in Serbia are similar to the drone found near the Leipzig Airport and that the explosives in Leipzig were also packaged in tin cans.
In the evening of Aug. 4, a drone loaded with explosives was discovered on a runway of the Leipzig Airport, which is one of the main hubs for shipping military aid to Ukraine. The drone was found near several Ukrainian transport jets. That same night, another transport jet collided with a second drone bearing military-grade explosives but managed to land safely, while a third drone was discovered over a week later in a field near the airport.
Meanwhile, the German portal T-Online has reported that Italy has launched an investigation into a person suspected of the “failed Leipzig attack,” claiming that Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced this at the margins of an informal meeting of the EU’s Foreign Affairs Council.
