Aleksandar Vucic (BETAPHOTO/MILAN ILIC)
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sept. 11 that he would resign from office "as soon as I return from New York," on Sept. 25 or 26, adding that after stepping down he will campaign as "an ordinary citizen."
"The law does not require me to do that. It is my choice. I do not want to campaign for the office of prime minister as the president of the Republic. No president has ever done that before. I want to be the first and spend the final month of the campaign as an ordinary citizen," Vucic said in Belgrade after presenting a new package of economic measures, adding that he would be travelling in in his own car.
"We have also rented a small truck so I can address people wherever I go. I am going without any particular plan, and wherever I end up, in a village or a town, I will speak to the people," Vucic said.
The president added that, under the law, within seven days of elections being called he is required to report any previously scheduled presidential activities to the Anti-Corruption Agency.
