Student Movement Submits Ticket to Electoral Commission

On Sept. 14, the university student protest movement handed in its ticket for the Oct. 25 parliamentary elections, titled "The Student Ticket - the Students Will Win," to the Serbian Electoral Commission in Belgrade.

The ticket, with all 250 candidates for members of the Serbian National Assembly, has been posted on the blokade.org student protest movement website. Ilija Srdanovic, a cardiologist and professor at the Novi Sad School of Medicine, heads the ticket.

The ticket includes teachers, doctors, artists, activists, entrepreneurs and people from different parts of Serbia, picked "in a decision-making process that we have built over more than a year of blockades, plenary meetings, talks and working together," the post reads.

The student movement did not look for people who would look good on a billboard or those who have known for years how to negotiate for a spot on an electoral ticket, but people who the students believe can become a part of institutions, do their jobs responsibly and not forget why they are there.

Students and their supporters first assembled in front of the university administration building at Studentski Trg square, marching  to the seat of the Commission on Kralja Milana Street in a procession carrying boxes full of the signatures of the voters who endorsed their ticket. 

The Commission has 48 hours by law to check the submitted documentation and determine if it meets the legal requirements before certifying the ticket.

The student movement has announced it will present the "Student Plan" -- its election platform -- across Serbia from Sept. 15 to 19.
