On Sept. 15, the European Parliament (EP) is set to discuss the funeral held in Belgrade for Ratko Mladic, the wartime commander of the Republika Srpska Army convicted of genocide and other war crimes during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), and the glorification of war crimes in Serbia.
The debate titled “The funeral for Ratko Mladic and the glorification of war crimes in Serbia” will be held as part of a plenary session in Strasbourg.
The European People’s Party Group in the EP has condemned the presence of high-ranking Serbian officials and military honors during the funeral service for Mladic in Belgrade.
Last week, two top EU officials, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Antonio Costa, condemned the glorification of Mladic and his funeral held in Belgrade on Sept. 7, while EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos cancelled an upcoming visit to Serbia, saying that following Mladic’s funeral with state honors in Belgrade, EU officials should clarify the very important question of whether Serbia is still suitable to be an EU candidate country.
