Vucic: Students’ Movement Pressuring Political Parties Not to Run in Elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic accused the students’ movement on Sept. 17 of pressuring all political parties into not running in the Oct. 25 elections.

“I am happy to see opposition parties, whose leaders I think the worst of, who have some courage and personal dignity and have refused to be banned from running by some people who think they are God-given and that the society should be ruled by a totalitarian ideology, with no-one being allowed to speak differently,” Vucic told Informer TV.

He said that many people had “earned his respect” only by deciding not to be “cowards and shun the elections.” “Even the head of (the students’) ticket is not younger than me, that ticket comprises no workers, or farmers, or students, expect those who have performed revolutions at universities,” Vucic stated.

He said that, when asked, the students in blockade present completely pointless answers about the country’s position regarding Republika Srpska and Kosovo, and that “many people think that those who are the worst should run the country, without a program.” He said he would try to conduct a “positive” election campaign, that he would present plans and that his intention was not to attack political opponents.
