On Sept. 28, former president of Serbia Aleksandar Vucic transferred his duties to Ana Brnabic, hitherto speaker of the National Assembly of Serbia, after handing in his resignation in the evening of Sept. 27.
Brnabic will act as the head of state until a new president is chosen or, at most, 90 days.
“Never before have we had such a president and never again will Serbia have a president who has fought so much and who was so self-sacrificing and truly set everything aside for [his country],” Brnabic stated after assuming her new role.
Vucic – who is the main candidate of the Serbian Progressive Party in the upcoming snap parliamentary elections – has said that the first round of presidential elections must take place by the end of December.
According to the Law on the President of State, the acting president is authorized to represent Serbia domestically and abroad, to accept letters of accreditation and recall from foreign diplomatic envoys, to call elections for the National Assembly, to propose prime minister designates to the National Assembly, the make decisions regarding the country’s defense and to command the Army of Serbia.
In case the president of state steps down from duty before his/her term ends, presidential elections must be called so that they take place at most 90 days from the day the president relinquished duty.
The regulations further prescribe that no less than 30 and no more than 60 days may pass from the moment presidential elections are called, meaning that the latest date for the presidential vote is Dec. 27, 2026.
