Elections (BETAPHOTO/DRAGAN GOJIC)
The State Electoral Commission has approved the proposed list of polling stations abroad which the Interior Ministry submitted for the upcoming Oct. 25 parliamentary elections. The list has been criticized by certain Commission members who believe that many of the diaspora will not have an accessible voting station and added that the Ministry did not appropriately explain how the listed locations were selected.
Commission president Vladimir Dimitrijevic has stated that the past elections provided 81 polling stations abroad while the currently approved list comprises 93. He went on to claim that the greater number of expats registered to vote in the upcoming snap elections “does not necessarily require a proportional increase in the number of polling stations abroad.”
Multiple members of the Commission, however, have recommended adding more voting stations to the approved list, opining that there are no legal hindrances to such a move.
These members have underscored that the number of emigrants currently signed up to vote is significant – presently at over 80,000, it is more than double that of the last elections, in December 2023 – and as such may actually sway the outcome of the upcoming parliamentary vote.
