Late in the evening of Oct. 6, the Assembly of Kosovo elected a new president of state, appointing current Kosova Academy of Sciences and Arts head Justina Shiroka Pula after 81 of 120 MPs voted in her favor.
Her counter-candidate was University of Pristina professor Eliza Hoxha.
Prior to the presidential election, the Assembly passed amendments to the Law on Specialized Councils and the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office with an 88 majority.
Justina Shiroka Pula was born in Pristina in 1953. She served as Kosovo’s minister of energy and mining from 2008 to 2011 and was a member of parliament from 2011 to 2014. Shiroka Pula holds a PhD in economics and became a member of the Kosova Academy of Sciences and Arts in 2016. In December 2025, she was appointed the Academy’s first female president.
By appointing a president of state just before the Oct. 6 midnight deadline, Kosovo has managed to avoid calling a fourth snap parliamentary election after holding three in the past two years.
