European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said on Oct. 7 that Serbia will have to achieve more toward EU accession and that it is yet to be seen how the country’s new government will act in this regard.
Presenting the European Commission’s plan for preparing the Union for further enlargement to the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), Kos stated that Serbia is not among the most advanced countries which will receive special roadmaps for EU accession.
“Serbia will have to deliver more. We’ll see how serious its new government will be following the elections, whether they will only say they want [Serbia] to become a member or take concrete action toward this [goal], especially with regards to strategic alignment with the Common Foreign and Security Policy,” Kos stated.
Apropos of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kos expressed her hope that, following its own elections, the country will continue its path toward EU membership and that its political leaders will be serious to continue the accession process.
“A roadmap only makes sense if the car is moving – none if it's standing still. We have to do everything for the car to start moving,” Kos explained, adding that reforms are the main fuel propelling said metaphorical vehicle forward.
On Oct. 6, the commissioner announced that, on Oct. 28, roadmaps containing next steps, tentative deadlines and concrete goals will be presented to the four candidate countries which have made most progress in euro-integrations: Montenegro, Albania, Moldova and Ukraine.
