Dragan Djilas (BETAPHOTO/MILAN OBRADOVIC)
Dragan Djilas, the leader of the oppositional Freedom and Justice Party and main candidate of the European Serbia ticket, said on Oct. 8 that, once the regime is changed, the international EXPO 2027 exhibition will be canceled and that all contracts, public procurements and money trails linked to the project will be audited.
“We’ll cancel the EXPO and every contract and every euro of public funds will be looked into. We’re talking about billions of euros belonging to the people of Serbia and serious suspicions of corruption of epic proportions. Nothing will be concealed,” Djilas said in his statement.
Djilas stressed that the appropriate institutions will audit “any suspect dealings” and that those responsible will be taken to court if any corruption is found.
According to him, particular attention will be paid to the safety of buildings constructed for the specialized international EXPO 2027 – which is supposed to take place in Belgrade from May 15 to Aug. 15, 2027 – since the entire project was developed hastily.
“Any building must pass serious and independent scrutiny. Construction in Serbia will be executed according to the law and standards used in the European Union. No EXPO, no deadline and no political interest are more important than human lives,” Djilas concluded.
