The Serbian Electoral Commission on Oct. 12 rejected due to lack of votes in favor a voter complaint about the inaccessibility of polling places abroad in the early parliamentary elections scheduled on Oct. 25 due to their distance from the residences of expatriate voters.
Of the 30 Commission members present, 14 voted in favor of the complaints, and one voted against, which means the complaint is considered dismissed.
Commission member and rapporteur Ivan Djordjevic said it is the Commission's duty to allow unimpeded access to polling places for persons with disabilities, but that this duty does not involve distance from the polling place.
He said the arguments in the complaint are unfounded and that there is no discrimination in the cited case.
Commission member Sofija Mandic said the voter complaint does not apply to disabled access to polling places, criticizing the remarks of Djordjevic.
She said Serbian citizens abroad will be forced to travel kilometers to exercise their right to vote and that in this sense the polling places are inaccessible.
She asked the Foreign Ministry to change its decision on expatriate voting abroad and allow Serbian citizens to exercise their rights.
