European Democrats
The European Democratic Party said in a statement on Oct. 16 that "a new generation of Serbs is ready to fight for a different future" in Serbia, urging Europe to stand with them.
In a post on the X social media network, the European Democrats wrote that "for months, students and young people have taken to the streets, refusing to accept corruption, intimidation and a democracy emptied of its meaning." "Their mobilization tells us something bigger: a new generation of Serbs is ready to fight for a different future," the post read.
The statement further read that former Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic's "system may look powerful, but no system lasts forever when a new generation stops being afraid and starts demanding change."
"Europe must stand with them and give their hope a horizon. Because Serbia can change. And this generation can change it," the European Democrats said. The post was accompanied by images from the student-led protests, with some of the captions reading "Hope - a new generation is rising in Serbia," "Hope - for democracy," "Hope - for freedom."
In earlier statements the European Democrats said that every day they try to shine a light on things Vucic would prefer to keep hidden from the world: election irregularities, political intimidation, restrictions for the free media and obstacles to democratic participation in elections. They have said they will continue to call attention to these concerns, amplify the voices of Serbian citizens and keep the eye of the international public on Serbia.
