Serbian Chief of Staff Milan Mojsilovic met with Italian Gen. Roberto Vergori, who recently assumed the duty of KFOR commander, in Belgrade on Oct. 16.
The Serbian Defense Ministry said in a statement that they discussed "the current security situation in Kosovo and Metohija, the problems and challenges faced by the Serb community and the activities of the Army of Serbia and KFOR toward preserving peace and security." "During the conversation the importance of open and direct communication between the Army of Serbia and KFOR on all levels in order to monitor the situation in the field and prevent the emergence and escalation of crises was stressed," the statement read.
The Serbian chief of staff said that "the security situation in Kosovo and Metohija is sensitive, the Serbs in the Province do not feel safe and their basic rights and freedoms are under threat." "Emphasizing that the Army of Serbia considers KFOR the only legitimate armed force in Kosovo and Metohija, he asked of the Italian general that International Security Forces carry out their mandate consistently and impartially, in accordance with Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council and other signed agreements, and provide a safe environment and freedom of movement for Serbs in our southern province," the statement read.
