On Oct. 21, the ruling Serbian Progressive Party’s United Serbia ticket held a campaign rally in Nis’s central square. A large number of people from all over the country arrived via organized transportation to hear speeches by the ticket’s lead candidate, Aleksandar Vucic, as well as his fellow Serbian ex-president Tomislav Nikolic and former Republika Srpska president Milorad Dodik.

Vucic stated that he wanted to hold his ticket’s last largescale rally in Nis because he “invested the most energy” over the past 12 years particularly into this city. “I brought 11 factories to Nis. Twelve years ago, Nis had 70,000 employed people and now the official number is 91,000. The average [monthly] salary used to be EUR309, now it is EUR1,007,” Vucic told the gathering.

The recently resigned president, who is no vying for the position of prime minister, went on to say that, following a win in the Oct. 25 snap parliamentary elections, he will take only one evening to celebrate and will extend a hand to his opponents so that, moving forward, they can solve problems unitedly.

The rally concluded with fireworks and the distribution of free food – including hamburgers, goulash and gyros – served at kiosks erected in the city center. During the gathering, attendees called out “Aca the Serb!,” “Ratko Mladic!,” “Victory, victory!,” and “Kosovo is Serbia!” while carrying banners with the images of Aleksandar Vucic and convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic.
