The general secretary of the European Democratic Party, Sandro Gozi, stated on Oct. 28 that attempts at causing violence and discrediting of the students’ movement in Serbia were unacceptable.

“”Peaceful democratic mobilization must never be responded to by intimidation or manipulation. The European Democratic Party stands firmly with the students and all who defend democracy, accountability, media freedom and rule of law by peaceful means,” Gozi said, as quoted by his party.

He further stated that violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic society.

“The authorities in Serbia have a responsibility to prevent escalation, guarantee fundamental liberties and honor the legitimate aspirations of their citizens. The democratic future of Serbia has to be determined by its citizens, free from fear, manipulation and provocation. Europe must unambiguously stand on their side,” Gozi stated.
