In the Transparency International (TI) 2023 ranking by corruption perception index (CPI), North Macedonia scored 42 out of 100, up from 40 in 2022, moving up nine positions to 76th.
Of the countries in the region, Croatia’s scored 50, unchanged from last year, ranking 57th, while Bosnia and Herzegovina, although improving its score by one point, remains the most corrupt country at 108th position.
The main reason for Bosnia’s low score is the dysfunctional rule of law, and widespread corruption amid general democratic backsliding and crackdowns on freedom of press and civil society, which monitor the work of the authorities and play an important role in detecting and curbing corruption.
Montenegro scored 46, one point more than last year, ranking 63rd. Scores of both Kosovo and Serbia remained unchanged against 2022, with CPI of 41 and 36 respectively. Kosovo is ranked 83rd and Serbia 104th out of 180 countries and territories around the globe.
