Vesna Medenica, who has served terms as the president of the Supreme Court and the chief prosecutor of Montenegro, was sentenced in the first instance on Jan. 28 to a ten-year prison term, together with her son, Milos Medenica, who also received ten years.
The prosecution has sought 20-year terms for both of them, coupled with fines of EUR100,000 each. The Special State Prosecution has declared that the presented evidence “unambiguously proves” that the criminal organization of Milos Medenica had influence on the court authority and other important societal factors, as seen from SKY evidence, secret surveillance measures, telephone communication of the former chief justice, witness testimonies and the written record of the search of the home of Vesna Medenica.
Several proceedings are under way against Vesna Medenica. In December 2025, she was sentenced in the first instance to 21 months in prison for abuse of office by abetting. Medenica has spent 17 years at the highest judicial functions in the country. She has been the chief state prosecutor and, in three consecutive terms, the president of the Supreme Court, until December 2020 when she resigned.
In the indictment according to which she was sentenced on Jan. 28, she is accused of smuggling, giving and receiving bribe, illegal influence and the unauthorized production, possession and trafficking of narcotics.
