Gordan Jandrokovic, speaker of the Croatian parliament, said on Sept. 11 that Serbia will not be able to count on Croatia's support in continuing negotiations on admission into the European Union if it remains on the political trajectory that the Belgrade funeral of convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic showed.

"If Serbia remains on that political path, not only can it not count on Croatia's support for its EU membership bid, it cannot count on support for continuing negotiations on membership," said Jandrokovic, an official of the ruling Croatian Democratic Union. He stressed that there is considerable agreement on the issue among parties in parliament.

Jandrokovic spoke about Mladic's funeral in Belgrade with the support of Serbian state institutions. He said that such a burial for a convicted war criminal is utterly unacceptable and in opposition to European values, warning that the atmosphere and political rhetoric in Serbia reminded many of the 1990s.

"Such a Serbia poses a serious threat to the security and stability of the southeast of Europe," a press release quoted Jandrokovic as saying.
