The former president of Republika Srpska (RS), Biljana Plavsic, was buried on Oct. 7 at the St Pantelija cemetery in Banjaluka.
During the funeral service, members of the Interior Ministry of RS held honorary guard of the coffin with Biljana Plavsic’s body. RS President Sinisa Karan said at the funeral that the Serb people would never forget Biljana Plavsic. “The creators of Srpska have created the framework for RS. Biljana would be grateful to those who have created and defended Srpska. Thank you for what you have created and defended. May the earth be light to you,” Karan stated.
The honorary guard then fired a gun salute in honor of the former RS president. Besides members of the her family, the funeral was attended by the leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats, Milorad Dodik, RS President Sinisa Karan, RS Premier Savo Minic, RS Assembly Speaker Nenad Stevandic, the Serb member of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina and a number of figures from the public and political life of RS.
Before the funeral, a commemoration was held at the Banski Dvor, where it was stated that Biljana Plavsic would be “recorded in Serb history in capital letters as the first woman president, a fighter for the Serb people and Republika Srpska.” Plavsic died in Belgrade on Oct. 1 at the age of 96. She has been sentenced by the Hague tribunal to 11 years in prison for crimes against humanity and was released on Oct. 27, 2009. She has since lived in Belgrade and has not engaged in politics.ersity student protest movement ticket post-election.
