Serbia's NIS oil company said in a press release on Jan. 9 that it had arranged its first imports of crude through the Croatian JANAF oil pipeline for the Pancevo refinery, which will allow production at the plant to restart.

The initial shipment of crude to the refinery is expected during the week, while the company plans more. In line with the rate of delivery, NIS also has plans to begin start-up activities in the refinery.

Early in December, the operation of the refinery's facilities was halted due to the lack of crude oil for processing after the U.S. Department of the Treasury imposed sanctions on NIS.

A special license issued by the U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control on Dec. 31, 2025, that expires on Jan. 23, allows NIS to resume operations, including relaunching processing in the refinery, importing crude oil, and performing transactions essential to the security of supply and maintenance.
