Representatives of Elektroprivreda Srbije (EPS) national power utility and Azerbaijan’s SOCAR signed a document in Baku on June 1 defining the terms of cooperation in the construction and operation of a gas-fired power plant in Nis.

The document, signed in the presence of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, sets out the key principles for establishing a joint company to develop and implement the project, as well as the main commercial aspects of future cooperation in the construction of a gas-turbine power plant in Nis, a strategic energy project within cooperation between Serbia and Azerbaijan.

The goal is to have a new baseload power generation facility with an installed capacity of up to 500 megawatts connected to the grid in 2030, Serbian Minister of Energy Dubravka Djedovic- Handanovic said. She stressed that cooperation with SOCAR confirmed the strong partnership between Serbia and Azerbaijan in the energy sector and opened room for new joint projects of mutual importance, Elektroprivreda Srbije said in a statement.

“The foundation of such successful cooperation between the two countries lies in the exceptionally good and friendly relations between Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, which have given a strong impetus to the advancement of overall bilateral relations, and especially cooperation in the energy sector,” Djedovic-Handanovic said.
