North Macedonia formed a new coalition government on June 23, headed by the leader of the nationalist VMRO-DPMNE party, Hristijan Mickoski, a university professor. Mickoski has already suggested that he will follow in the footsteps of the former prime minister, Nikola Gruevski, his mentor, sparking fears of a slowdown on the country’s path to the European Union (EU), strained bilateral relationships with Bulgaria and Greece, and new tensions among local ethnic communities.
