The Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport will not close down during the state of emergency due to coronavirus pandemic, but, as of March 19, it will temporarily suspend all of its international commercial air traffic, the Serbian Ministry of Construction, Transportation and Infrastructure has announced.
The government has also ordered a temporary closing of the international border crossing at the Belgrade airport, starting March 19. The airport will remain open for all humanitarian and cargo flights, while the Serbian airspace will stay open for all transit flights, the ministry’s statement added.
Serbian Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic said on March 19 that passenger traffic will be fully restricted, adding that the Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport will operate only with the special permission from the government.
“Only aircrafts carrying aid and experts who can helps us will be allowed to land; others will have to wait,” the minister said for Prva TV.
Stefanovic also said that in addition to suspending passenger flights to Serbia, the government is also considering the possibility of restricting other traffic into Serbia, as its calls have been disregarded.
“In the past four days over 70,000 people had arrived in Serbia,” Stefanovic said.
He added that quarantines will be established as of March 19, and that so far people were only sent into self-isolation. “Only the people who do not have a permanent address here will be isolated in this way. These are our citizens who have sold their homes or have no permanent address in Serbia for some other reason. They will be sent to quarantines,” the minister said.
