Belgrade Clinical Center of Serbia Director Milika Asanin said on April 16 that additional 2,000 tests on the presence of coronavirus will be carried per day in the hospital’s new laboratory.

The laboratory is one of the two that were delivered by China on April 15.

Asanin told the RTS public service that the laboratory is currently being installed, and that the people who will work in it are undergoing training. “I hope that we will begin working shortly. This laboratory means a lot as it is a complete system for the molecular detection of the coronavirus’ infectious substances,” he said.

The additional tests will help uncover new cases of infected people, but will also enable a large number of control checks,” Asanin added.

Some 40 molecular biologists from various scientific and research centers in Serbia will work in the Belgrade laboratory around the clock. The other laboratory will be set up in Nis.

Deputy director of the Batut Institute for Public Health Darija Kisic Tepavcevic said on April 16 that the epidemiological situation in most of Serbia is under control and “on a stable level,” adding that “we are now focused on the hotspots that are emerging individually.”)
