Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on May 3 that the curfew will likely be lifted on May 7, adding that local and parliamentary elections, previously postponed because of the state of emergency, will be held either on June 14 or June 21.

Vucic told TV Pink that the Serbian government will hear the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of the Interior’s recommendations regarding the state of emergency on May 4, and that on May 6 the Cabinet will submit a proposal to withdraw restrictive measures to the National Assembly, which means that the curfew should no longer be in effect as of May 7.

The president also said that the conditions that the epidemiologists had set for such a decision have been met. These were one whole week in which the number of new coronavirus cases did not exceed 5 percent of the total number of the people tested and a drop in the number of patients on ventilators.

According to epidemiologist Predrag Kon, the schools will remain closed and bans on social gatherings and other measures introduced to help fight the virus will still apply even after the curfew has been lifted.

Speaking about the general elections, Vucic said that on May 4 he will meet with the representatives of the opposition who want to discuss the electoral process, and that it depends on this meeting whether the elections will be held on June 14 or on June 21.
