The Republic Electoral Commission has proclaimed 21 tickets for the June 21 parliamentary election and, according to the names on the election tickets, primarily those which are already represented in the Serbian Parliament, it can be concluded that the majority of current MPs from the ruling parties would keep their seats.
Political analyst Boban Stojanovic told BETA on June 10 that this was what the ruling parties were expected to do.
"The ruling parties nominate their well-known members, expecting them to attract the voters. Young and new people are at the bottom of the tickets and they will certainly not become MPs. As for the opposition parties that will participate, their candidates are either seasoned politicians, as is the case with the ticket of the United Democratic Serbia, or people who are completely unknown to the public," Stojanovic assessed.
The analyst stated that, when signing support to an election ticket, the people do not know who will be on the ticket. "You give your signature without knowing who would be on the ticket. Party presidents decide who will be on the ticket and that is why MPs are not representatives of the people, but of parties. It is much more important to MPs to be on good terms with the party head, than to represent the interests of the voters," Stojanovic explained.
