An association of trade unions of Serbia's army pensioners protested in Belgrade, on June 15, because no candidate was offering an answer to their demand that the 2014 pensions be paid back to them, but also because they believed that health requirements for the June 21 polls hadn't been met, making the election a particular health hazard for pensioners, the most vulnerable to Covid-19.
The president of the association, Jovan Tamburic, said to reporters that the protesters wanted the pensions that were taken away from them in 2014 to be paid back with interest, and that the Pension and Disability Fund be protected against government influence and dependence on the national budget, but made self-sustainable instead. This, in his words, might make it possible that pensions are never reduced by a government decree again.
Tamburic said that neither the parties and organizations taking part in the election, nor those who had decided to boycott it, were offering solutions to the key issues in the pensioner community, including a compensation for the 2014 pension cuts and the question why the vote was taking place despite the coronavirus pandemic
