Members of the European Parliament (EP) Tanja Fajon and Vladimir Bilcik, the mediators in the inter-party dialogue about the improvement of election conditions in Serbia, called for the "credible, transparent and peaceful" elections in Serbia, in a joint statement ahead of the June 21 elections in Serbia, which, as they stated, were key for the country's European integration.
“On Sunday, June21, 2020, Serbia will be one of the first countries in Europe to hold Parliamentary and municipal elections under restricted conditions due to COVID-19. In addition to ensuring credible, transparent and peaceful elections, we also urge all participants to respect the health and safety measures put in place for election day,” Fajon and Bilcik declared in a joint statement.
They stressed that the integrity of the election process depended on full respect of the fundamental democratic principles, according to which citizens may freely express their will through the ballot box, in a peaceful environment, without any pressure or intimidation.
Fajon and Bilcik stated that, although the EP would not be sending observers to the elections due to the corona virus, it continued to carefully monitor all events.
