On June 30 Montenegro opened Chapter 8 on competition policy, the final chapter in negotiations on membership in the EU.

The EU delegation was headed by Ambassador Irena Andrasi, acting in the name of the Croatian chairmanship over the EU, the Montenegrin delegation by Ambassador Bojan Sarkic, chief of Montenegro's mission to the EU, while the European Commission was represented by Christian Danielsson, the Director-General for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement.

Montenegro has now opened all 33 negotiating chapters out of the total 35. Three chapters have been temporarily closed.

Montenegro began the negotiations in 2012.

As for Chapter 8, according to a statement released by Brussels, the EU has performed an in-depth analysis of Montenegro's readiness and said that further progress is required in harmonizing and applying the EU's acquis, as well as that there were criteria that needed to be met to temporarily close the chapter.
