Serbian Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said on Aug. 16 that the Kosovo issue could be resolved only if the interests of the Serbs and Albanians were respected, underlining that Belgrade was "prepared to compromise provided that national and state interests were protected." In an interview he gave to the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) ahead of a meeting between Belgrade and Pristina's delegations hosted by the White House, Minister Dacic said that he didn't expect any unpleasant surprises.
Dacic quoted Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic as saying that all the talks he had had with the U.S. President's envoy for the Belgrade-Pristina talks Richard Grenell "indicated that economy will be the theme" of the meeting in Washington.
"If someone tries to find a shadowy way to involve politics in papers and agreements, President Vucic said it would be unacceptable," Dacic said. In the same interview the minister said that the European Union was unlikely to change entry restrictions over the coronavirus pandemic.
Speaking of the Union's rules he said the EU was on holiday, and that there would be no meetings until it was over, "some time in late August."
