Epidemiologist Predrag Kon on Aug. 18 said that 100 new Covid-19 cases reported on Aug. 17 for the previous day “are not fully realistic,” adding that new data should show between 100 and 200 new infections.
Kon told TV Prva that 100 new coronavirus cases reported on Aug. 17 were encouraging, but added that all should bear in mind that fewer people were being tested on Sundays.
“The virus is still present and is always looking for ways to transmit from one person to another as it is its way to survive,” Kon said and called on citizens to continue abiding by the countermeasures prescribed by the Crisis Headquarters.
According to him, the virus activity has been picking up across Europe and “it can also happen in Serbia.”
Speaking about potential lifting of certain restrictions, including allowing for longer working hours of cafes and the opening of theaters, Kon said that such measures should be considered for economic reasons, but would not be safe enough from epidemiological point of view.
In a statement to the public broadcaster RTS on Aug. 18, epidemiologist Branislav Tiodorovic said that all should contribute to the opening of schools, but added that in case of another coronavirus peak or increased risk of virus spread, school attendance would be suspended and schools would switch to online classes.
