According to Radio Free Europe, local self government in Presevo confirmed that Serbia has begun putting up a wire fence on its border with North Macedonia near Presevo, to prevent possible future mass illegal border crossings.
Shqiprim Arifi, the head of Presevo municipality, told RFE on Aug. 18 that the construction of the wire fence was a part of an agreement with the EU.
“We think that the fence is an additional protection of the boundaries with the non-EU countries from an influx of refugees who might again come en masse through the Balkan route,” Arifi said, adding that seeing it this way, “the fence indirectly contributes to the process of EU integration.”
RFE said that the European Commission has failed to answer the question whether or not they had been informed or consulted about the fence between Serbia and North Macedonia. It also recalled that Serbia is along the so-called “Balkan Route” which the migrants and refugees are using in an attempt to reach the EU.
According to the latest available data, published by the Serbian Commissariat for Refugees and Migration on June 20, there are 4,800 persons in 18 asylum centers and reception facilities in Serbia.
