Prominent Serbian epidemiologist Branislav Tiodorovic said that a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic was expected later this year, but that sporadic cases were expected in the meantime.

"Ideally, the number of new infections should be below 10 a day, Dr Tiodorovic said, adding in an Aug. 23 interview for the Blic daily that the first wave was not over, and that the target rate would not be easy to reach.

The leading epidemiologist said the situation in Serbia was better than in the first months of the outbreak, because fewer people were being hospitalized and the number of patients on ventilators was going down. In addition, the number of patients being released from hospitals now exceeds Covid-19 hospital admissions.

"The number is still not below 100 new cases, which is why it is very difficult to give an accurate assessment. I need to warn people returning from vacation from the seaside, lakes, mountains and spas because the question is did all of them honor measures like the people whom they met there," Tiodorovic said.
