Verica Jovanovic, the director of the Batut Public Health Institute, described on Nov. 5 the current epidemiological situation in Serbia as threatening, adding that this is the reason why the country needs a more extensive control over the adherence to the protective measures.
Speaking for the RTS public service she recalled that on Nov. 4, out of some 12,000 people tested, over 2,400 were found positive to COVID-19 – which is a very high percentage.
“The majority of the newly infected were registered in Belgrade, followed by Novi Sad and Kragujevac; there is a great rise in the number of new cases in Valjevo and Kraljevo, while in other cities the situation is somewhat better. Around 15 percent of the new cases require hospitalization, and only on Nov. 4, we had 400 new patients admitted to hospitals, which poses a great risk,” the institute director warned.
She urged the citizens to keep the physical distance and avoid social gatherings, saying that by doing so they will help the healthcare system provide them with adequate service.
Talking about the seasonal flu shots, she stated that it is important to get vaccinated against the flu even though there had not been any confirmed cases in Serbia this season as yet, in order to prevent a possible combined effect of COVID-19 and the flu.
