On Nov. 9, Serbian Health Ministry State Secretary Mirsad Djerlek called the epidemiological situation in Serbia worrisome, adding that the number of the newly infected is expected to rise by the end of the week.

In an appearance on the Pink TV, he urged the citizens to adhere to the measures. “It all depends on us; we can choose to finally discipline ourselves and help others, ourselves and the state, or to act irresponsibly like a huge group of people does,” the state secretary said.

Commenting on the increase in the number of those hospitalized and the fact that 409 patients showing not too grave symptoms have so far been admitted to the temporary COVID-19 hospital in Belgrade’s Stark Arena whose capacity is 510, Djerlek said that Zemun Hospital has fully been converted to a provisional clinic as well – which, according to him, is encouraging. He, however, warned that not even this would be enough if “those irresponsible groups” continue to act so “arrogantly.”

No drastic tightening of measures, according to him, is currently being considered.

“There’s a lot of politicization [of the situation] all over Serbia. This is not a fight for elections, but for each and every life in Serbia,” the state secretary said.
