Dr Predrag Kon, a leading epidemiologist in the government's Covid-19 Crisis Headquarters, warned on Nov. 18 that as the number of new infections had continued to grow, increasing the number of hospitalizations as well, the national healthcare system was pushed to "the brink of survival."

Dr Kon said in an interview with the Serbian Broadcasting Corporation (RTS) that the alarming figures aside, a curfew was not necessary. "What would we need a curfew for? The streets are empty already," he said.

The epidemiologist said he was confident that the new national restrictions that went into force on Nov. 17, including the closure of cafes, restaurants, shops and malls from 9 pm to 5 am, would be effective.

"Is there anything else we can do? Hardly. Only up to five people can meet in one place, which actually means that all gatherings are forbidden," Dr Kon said.
