Nenad Popovic, Serbian minister without portfolio in charge of innovations and technological development, said on Twitter in the evening on April 14 that the first control doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine against COVID-19 have been produced at the Torlak Institute of Virology, Vaccines and Sera in Belgrade.

“The production will begin as of May 20,” Popovic said.

At the same time, according to Radio Free Europe, the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) announced on its website the start of the production of the Sputnik V Russian vaccine in Serbia.

“Serbia thus became the first country in South Europe that will produce Sputnik V. The production will abide by the strictest standards,” the RDIF said.

RDIF Executive Director Kiril Dimitriyev stated that the production of the Russian vaccine had been launched successfully and within a very short time. “Serbia is the first country in Europe to begin producing the Russian vaccine,” Dimitriyev said.

The announcement added that, later on, the vaccine will be available for export to other countries.
