The state secretary in the Serbian Health Ministry, Mirsad Djerlek, said on April 29 that the latest epidemiological data is encouraging as the number of patients being admitted to hospitals is on the decline, while the number of those being discharged is on the rise. There are still, he added, around 5,000 people in hospitals, some 160 of whom are on ventilators.

Djerlek told the RTS public service that the immunization in the country will continue over the upcoming holidays, and that the eUprava website will continue to issue invitations. Certain vaccination points will allow the citizens to get the shots without previous appointments.

“Our goal is to have as many people vaccinated as possible over the holidays,” he said and added that around 2,005,000 people in Serbia have already been vaccinated, with Belgrade, Nis and Uzice boasting the highest numbers, while Tutin, Novi Pazar and Leskovac have the lowest number of the vaccinated people.

On May 15, according to the state secretary, the government will launch a campaign to promote the vaccination of the younger generations to counter the “harmful effects’” of the social media, which had led to the majority of youth choosing not to get immunized against COVID-19.

Talking about the upcoming Easter and May Day holidays, Djerlek said that the government will tighten control to make sure that the epidemic measures are respected in the open, picnic areas, cafes, bars, restaurants, hotels and public transportation.
