Europol: Counterfeit Honey Seized in Serbia, Fake Wine in Croatia

More than 15,000 tons of illegal food products worth EUR53.8 million were confiscated in the latest Operation OPSON X, which involves more than 70 states, the EUROPOL reported.

The operation coordinated by the European Union's law enforcement agency, EUROPOL, and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) involved 72 states, including Serbia, was targeted at counterfeit and substandard food and beverages.

The operation focused on fake honey in 17 states, including Serbia, resulting in more than 51 tons of adulterated honey seized.

In the 22 states involved, including Croatia, North Macedonia, Italy, France, Greece, Spain and Portugal, a total of 1.7 million liters of fake wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages were confiscated. Illegal sale of horse meat was discovered in Croatia and another six European states.

The Operation OPSON was supported by the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF), the Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety (DG SANTE), the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) and national regulatory bodies in charge of food safety and partners in the private sector.
