One of the founders of the National Environmental Association (NEA), Milenko Jovanovic, has said that a report by the Belgrade City Institute for Public Health and company Beo Cista Energija on air quality following a fire at the Vinca landfill “does not provide true information on the impacts on human health during an event that is not over yet.”
“During the very expected fire at the Vinca landfill, certain level of emissions of extremely toxic materials have occurred...,” Jovanovic told the Aug. 17 issue of Belgrade daily Danas. The daily recalled that Jovanovic had served as a chief of a department at the Environmental Protection Agency before he had been illegally discharged.
According to Jovanovic, the report provided only data on standard air pollutants which were regularly monitored and included carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and PH particles. “Those are not adequate parameters that need to be monitored to establish the true air quality. It is normal to tell the citizens: you are potentially at risk, stay at your homes, look after children and vulnerable groups, rather than say that there is no pollution,” Jovanovic stressed.
