Serbian Minister of Education, Science and Technological Development Branko Ruzic said on Aug. 30 that around 52 percent of teachers had been immunized, explaining that the ratio might be similar to the proportion of vaccinated people in the general population, but it was not high enough.
"Children will return to school full time, except in 15 municipalities using a combined model for high schools, and in Tutin, shifting high school classes online," Ruzic said in an interview with the Prva TV, adding the the municipal models had been chosen based on the Covid-19 parameters of a self-government unit."
The minister said that a special team, comprising experts from the Batut Institute and representatives of his ministry, would decide if the chosen models should be changed.
When asked about a decision that masks be worn in classrooms, Minister Ruzic said that the measure would be implemented in line with medical protocols."When a teacher, who is vaccinated and not required to wear a mask, comes closer to a student, yet staying 1.5 meters away from him or her, the teacher must wear a mask, because they are going to communicate. Likewise, when the teacher calls on a student, the student needs to wear a mask, too," Ruzic explained.
